Meet our Other Additions to the Board of Directors...

Sue & Dan N.

I have been infatuated with all kind of animals all my life. As a child, I grew up around Birmingham Rolling Pigeons that my parents raised and my sister and I would always bring them up into the house in shoeboxes to “visit” with them since they lived in an outdoor pen. I would set them up on my floor in my bedroom on newspaper with stuff around the edges so that they couldn’t walk off the edges of the paper. I would hand feed them in the hopes that one would become tame and enjoy my company, as much as I did theirs, and perhaps fly to me someday, but none ever did.

I couldn’t wait until I got my own apartment to get my own “pets” which were Tiger and Misty our Domestic short hair cats. When Dan and I got together, we got our first parrot on March 2nd 2001, a male blue American Parakeet named “Fez” and he started it all. Fez fulfilled my dream of having a bird fly to me and also having a bird that enjoying being with me as much as I enjoyed being with them. It was such a special moment that first time he flew to me. There were other factors that led to us letting him become full-flighted, like his inability to fly properly even with a good wing cut, and I also worried about fatty liver disease and tumors since they seem to be afflict pet budgies. He’s so special to me, I wanted to do everything I could to ensure him a long healthy life. So we left his wings grow and we never use the front door or any door except the garage door that leads into the garage when we have our birds out. Since Fez, we’ve added 2 tiels, a Triton Cockatoo, and a female Rosey Bourke. I also share my life with 18 Zebra finches, 2 crested Zebra finches, a green-sided Parrot Finch, an Orange Weaver finch, "Mo" & "Curly" (the WOH Society Finches), "Goldie" (the WOH female Canary), "Spice" (the WOH male Canary), "Sugar" (the WOH female Canary).

I have been involved with parrot rescue since March of 2003. I was elected Vice President of this bird rescue and in that capacity I made the Intake/Requisition Forms, Adoption Contracts and other documents necessary for this organization. My husband and I also made the business cards, tri-fold brochures, website, the newsletters for this rescue, did a home visit or 2, helped with Intakes, and I made and kept updated the Available and Adopted Bird Books. I know this is my Bio, but Dan and I work very closely together and so many of these things we accomplished as a team, so that’s why I’m writing it this way. ;0) I was involved with this rescue for 1 year and 2 months. I feel that I learned a lot from my past experiences and I try to apply these things that I have learned to Wings of Hope.

I started with Wings of Hope back in January of 2005. I enjoy reading about birds and parrots and love doing the Wings of Hope websites, and I really enjoyed the fundraiser that we did at the Lancaster Host this past October. I also enjoy reading Liz Wilson’s Handbooks and Sally Blanchard’s books. I find it extremely rewarding to work with everyone at Wings of Hope to help these displaced birds find great forever homes. I consider myself very lucky to have found such a wonderful group in which to volunteer my time. In a board capacity, I would continue to do everything I can to help Wings of Hope to be the successful bird and small animal rescue that it is.
